Elias Sinda: "I used to farm maize and harvest six sacks per acre. This was not enough to feed my family and I couldn’t sell any to pay my children’s school fees. When Nuru came they taught us new farming methods and provided loans for those who could not afford to purchase fertilizers and topdressing for planting. Now I get 16 bags of maize from one acre. We have enough (maize) to eat and I can sell some to pay for my children’s school fees."

Margaret Matinde: "I was living in a mud thatched house and I couldn’t afford to send my children to school. When Nuru came I joined a savings club. After saving for 12 weeks I took a loan which I used to start a restaurant. My business has done well and I was able to pay off the loan. Now I can pay the school fees for my children."

Nuru International is proud to be the first organization in Africa to implement the Multidimensional Poverty Assessment Tool (MPAT), a new measurement tool developed by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), a specialized agency of the United Nations. "When I was just a child, I always wondered why we were poor." Philip Mohochi is the Chairman of Nuru International - Kenya. He grew up in extreme poverty in Kuria, Kenya, and now leads all of Nuru's Kenyan staff as they partner together to lift their community out of extreme poverty forever. Nuru CEO Jake Harriman served as platoon commander in the Infantry and Force Recon. After earning a Bronze Star fighting the war on terror, Jake saw that the only chance we have to end terrorism is to end extreme poverty. He enrolled at Stanford's Graduate School of Business, and with the help of classmates, professors, and Silicon Valley venture capitalists, he formed Nuru International. This is his story. Mobile banking technology is providing financial services to Kenyan farmers living in extreme poverty. Nuru International's savings-led Community Economic Development Program integrates Mifos and M-Pesa to disburse microloans as one of many different poverty solutions.

Nuru believes that leadership is key to ending extreme poverty. As Nuru expands into neighboring communities in desperate need, we recognize that more and more leaders must be equipped. That's why we're building the Regional Training Center.

Our event "Be Hope to Her" (BH2O+) allows us to literally walk through that experience in solidarity with them.
