Summary

The goal of the Water & Sanitation Program is to empower communities to implement incremental solutions that they both want and can sustain by themselves. These solutions are incremental so that families can improve their water and sanitation progressively since larger integrated approaches often present significant cost barriers that place them out of reach for the poor. Communities, families, and individuals all must want to make these changes, so that they will take ownership and maintain them. Developing these solutions requires participation from the community in order to create awareness and demand. Accordingly, we must cultivate leaders in the community capable of facilitating genuine conversations and sparking demand. At the end of the day, for lasting change to take place, it is the community themselves who will determine their own solutions to water and sanitation.   -Last updated 06/07/11
